Learning to Trust Your Instincts

with Russ Hudson and Cheryl Richardson

Join Russ and Cheryl for a yearlong, in-depth study of the Instinctual Variants of the Enneagram.

Exploring the instincts helps us to understand where we habitually focus our attention and energy – for better or worse – and what we need to do differently to create a stronger sense of security, to enjoy deeper more meaningful connections with others, and to experience more energy and aliveness in everyday life.

The instincts represent the basic driving forces that operate throughout our daily life. They include:

  • The Self Preservation drive, focused on survival needs such as money, food, health, safety, comfort, environment, etc.
  • The Sexual drive, focused on sexuality, and also on the experience of aliveness, and the adventures and activities that capture our attention and energy.
  • The Social drive, focused on connection and communication between human beings in order to create and sustain the bonds that make life possible.

The expression of all three instincts is important to healthy, functioning adults and the goal of this yearlong program is to help you learn to balance these instincts more skillfully in your daily life.

By observing yourself through the lens of your instinctual behaviors, you learn about how well you take care of your basic needs, how you navigate relationships, whether or not you cultivate meaningful connections with others, and how able you are to welcome change and take risks.

While the instincts are clearly defined and observable in their own right (independent of your Enneagram type), a general understanding of the Enneagram will enhance your experience of our program. You can identify your Enneagram type (RHETI) and your most developed and least developed instincts (IVT) by taking tests here. You can also learn about both by reading “The Wisdom of the Enneagram” by Russ Hudson and Don Richard Riso.

Over the course of a year, Russ and Cheryl will host monthly Zoom classes where you’ll learn:

  • A deeper understanding of what the instinctual variants are and how they influence the quality of your life.
  • How your current instinctual patterns are being run by unconscious programming.
  • What your personal relationship is to each of the three instincts – Self Preservation, Sexual, and Social.
  • How your Enneagram type may be distorting the expression of your instincts.
  • How your undeveloped instincts get you into trouble.
  • How to identify your “blind spots” – the instincts that need more of your time and attention.
  • The role instincts play in your personal and professional relationships.
  • The actions you can take to address your undeveloped instincts so you’re able to balance security, connection, and aliveness in your daily life.

Each month Russ and Cheryl will host a two-hour class that includes teaching and coaching. At the end of each class, you’ll be given homework designed to be easily completed before the next class. The homework will help you to make measurable, positive changes to your quality of life because when the instincts are developed and consciously balanced, life not only improves dramatically on a practical level, you gain access to higher states of consciousness that allow you to operate with more clarity, wisdom, and love.

Who should attend:
