Every morning I start my day with a ritual that feels good. I wake up and before I do anything else, I head out to the deck to care for the birds and animals that share our yard.
I fill the feeders, place homemade suet in the holder, and clean and fill the giant bowl that serves as a birdbath.
The red-winged blackbirds, bright yellow goldfinches, cardinals, sparrows, and more swoop overhead waiting as I prepare their meal. The squirrels and chipmunks stand guard at the edge of the woods ready to pounce as soon as I’m done.
Then I head inside and watch the beautiful chaos that ensues.
There’s something healing about caring for others, especially during tough times. We’re reminded that we have something important to offer the world however small or insignificant it might seem.
Caring is a good form of therapy. It just feels good to be kind.
Speaking of feeling good, I remember the night my husband, Michael, shared a video with me when I was feeling a bit melancholy. “You’re gonna love this,” he said in an uncharacteristically excited tone. “I promise, this will make you so happy!”
It was a video of James Corden and Paul McCartney during an episode of Carpool Karaoke and Michael was right. As I watched it, I couldn’t stop smiling.
This morning, after feeding the birds, I searched for a blog to publish today since I didn’t have time to write a new one. I watched the Carpool Karaoke video again and decided to share it with you. It’s a fun trip down memory lane – a journey worth taking now and then ourselves in order to see our lives from a wider perspective.
There’s also a sweet part of the video when Paul talks about a dream where his deceased mother came to him to let him know everything would be okay. His dream inspired the song Let it Be. It’s such a beautiful, authentic moment between a young man and a wise elder.
Whether you’ve seen this episode or not doesn’t matter, you’ll love it, I promise. It’s special and it might even be a much-needed balm for your weary soul.
