Every morning I start my day with a ritual that makes me feel good. I wake up and before I do anything else, I head out to the deck to care for the birds and animals that share our yard.
I fill the feeders, place homemade suet in its holder, and clean and fill the giant bowl that serves as a birdbath.
The red-winged blackbirds, bright yellow finches, sparrows, and more, swoop overhead waiting as I prepare their meal. The squirrels and chipmunks stand guard at the edge of the woods ready to pounce as soon as I’m done.
Then I head inside and watch the beautiful chaos that ensues.
There’s something so healing about caring for others, especially during times of grief. Life goes on. I’m reminded that I have something vital to offer the world. And I feel connected to a greater force at a time when I often feel disconnected from myself.
Caring for others is a good form of therapy.
Several years ago I started a “Good Stuff Giveaway” list with this community. Now and then I choose, at random, someone to receive a book or a deck of cards, and I always include a note of appreciation with an uplifting message. I can’t tell you the number of times this ritual lifted my spirits when I needed it most.
It just feels good to be kind to people.
Speaking of feeling good, last night I had a chance to be on the receiving end of a feel-good gift that I wanted to share with you this week. Michael and I took a ride to one of our favorite restaurants – a little mom and pop place near the beach – to enjoy a quiet meal together. Michael parked the car and asked me to wait while he pulled up a video he wanted me to see.
“You’re gonna love this,” he said in an uncharacteristically excited tone. “I promise, this will make you feel so good!”
And it did. I couldn’t stop smiling. So I thought I’d pass it on to you. Please enjoy every minute of this video (even if you’ve seen it already) and be sure to watch to the end. You can find it here.
Here’s to feeling good today!
P.S. – You’re welcome to add your name to the “Good Stuff Giveaway” list here and please be assured that your info is only used for this free gift giveaway and nothing else.
