On the days when you feel helpless and hopeless

about world events, try this.

Last week I found a way to fix a problem that’s been keeping me up at night. For two weeks I’d been waking up in the middle of the night feeling anxious.  As soon as my eyes opened, I’d start ruminating about things like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Russia and the Ukraine, or the Nigerian girls who are still missing after more than three damn months. As a sensitive woman, I feel energy.  I feel the effects of war and violence and trauma on my system.  While I do my best to limit exposure to painful news and heartbreaking stories, it still seeps in.  After all, life is energy and we’re all connected.

What happens in every corner of the world touches each one of us whether we’re aware of it or not.

So lately, as world events unfold and we see the demise of old structures and strategies, I sometimes feel so helpless and hopeless about life.  And when this happens, it’s all downhill from there.

If you’ve been following me long enough you know that I believe consciousness affects the physical world.  How and what we think matters.

But sometimes I forget.  Like everyone else, I fall prey to worry and fear and bad habits.

Fortunately, I was able to put an end to the downward spiral this week.  Here’s what happened…

Michael and I decided to have dinner at a local restaurant where we know many of the waitstaff.  One waitress, in particular, is someone we’ve known for a long time and she happened to be on duty that night.

When she came to take our order, we asked about her and her family.  In the most humble way, she talked about trying to handle some very difficult challenges.

Honestly, it sounded as if her whole life had been flung up into the air and pieces were starting to crash down around her.

Michael and I shared our concern, offered her advice and resources, and wished her well when we left.

Later that evening, when I woke in the middle of the night, she immediately came to my mind.  I wonder how she’s doing, I thought to myself.  Will her kids be okay?  Can she find a new place to live in enough time?  Who will take care of her?

Maybe because I was half asleep or maybe it was Divine Intervention, but I suddenly heard the words:

Stop worrying and start praying

In this in-between state, I think I actually smiled.

Rather than focus on the problems she faced, I immediately started praying for this sweet woman.

I imagined her happy.
I pictured her living in a light-filled, comfortable new home.
I saw her surrounded by loving, helpful people.

And I prayed that she would receive all the resources she needed to feel safe and secure.

The more I prayed, the better I felt, and soon enough, I went back to sleep.

So I kept doing it all week.

At night (and even throughout the day), when I started worrying about someone or something, I started praying instead.

I wasn’t helpless after all.

It’s so easy to think we live in a solid, finite universe that only responds to physical action.  But what if there’s far more power and influence in using the energy we can’t see?

The quality of my consciousness matters.

The quality of yours does, too.

Prayers are energy – thoughts wrapped in love, directed towards wholeness and healing.

This energy can change the world.

Don’t take my word for it, though.  Test this principle.  Pick a problem (personal or global) and rather than worry about it, start praying for healing each time it enters your consciousness.

Then, wait for signs of positive movement…

A ceasefire
A willingness to discuss a peace plan
A break in the case
A lead on a new home
An unexpected check
A surprise gift from a stranger

Prayer creates miracles.  And when we pray together they happen faster.

Just you wait and see…

This Week’s Video

I found this short video about homelessness and it inspired such feelings of love and kindness toward humanity so I thought I’d share it with you.  You can find it here.
