As we head into the last days of 2010, I wanted to wish each and every one of you a joyful holiday filled with rest, relaxation, and meaningful experiences. To support you in creating a beautiful end to 2010, I wanted to remind you of four wishes that will help you to make the most of this special time of year:
May you create the space for spontaneous joy. Some of my most memorable holiday experiences occurred during a period of down time when I gave myself the gift of an unscheduled hour, afternoon, or evening to simply do whatever I wanted to do in the moment. I still remember the day I walked around a shopping mall without any agenda except to take in the sights and sounds of Christmas, and ran into my childhood best friend. We sat and enjoyed a cup of tea together and reminisced about our days of being a kid. It was an afternoon I’ll never forget.
May you become an expert at receiving help. Over the next several days, when you catch yourself saying things like, “No thanks, I can do these dishes myself,” or, “That’s okay, I don’t need any help with gift wrapping,” or “Yes, I know you have an idea for how to make my life easier, but I’ve always done it this way,” stop, take a deep breath, and listen. Then, say something like, “Yes, I’d love help with the dishes,” or “Of course you can wrap these gifts with me,” and “Thank you for caring, tell me more.” One of the greatest gifts we give to others is our willingness to let them give to us.
May you become masterful at being lazy. Now, if after reading the last line you thought, “I couldn’t possibly do that, I don’t have time,” then I am definitely talking to you. Over the next ten days do something to relax your body and rest your mind. For example, sleep an hour or two longer than you normally would, hang out in front of the television watching movies all afternoon, or let the dishes sit on the table long after the holiday meal is over so you can enjoy talking with your guests. After all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, you’ve earned the right to let a few things go so you can rest and relax.
May you be a risk-taker for love. During the holidays many of us spend time with family and friends. This year take some kind of risk to bring you closer to the loved ones that matter most. For example, say, “I love you” to someone you haven’t said it to before. Ask Aunt Mary to tell you what it’s like to be eighty years old. Take the time to find out whether your grown children are content with their jobs, their marriages, or their dreams. Worry less about what others might think and more about how they feel so you can experience the power of love.
If you allow yourself to indulge these four simple wishes, you’ll be sure to not only enjoy this holiday season, you’ll set yourself up to start the New Year with less stress, more rest, and a rich and grateful heart!
Happy, Happy Holidays to you!
